The Trees (Original)

My green branches wander, within and without,
	They move through the air, then pause, turn about.
The wind it is gentle, delicate, a zephyr,
	Tossing my leaves like pieces of silver;
The moonlight they catch and silvery play,
	For darkness has come, 'tis no longer day.
It walks through the trees, the wind, at a pace,
	It idles past flowers, leaflets like lace,
Then stops at the glade which lies at my feet:
	His master soon comes, beneath they shall meet.
The moment is here, he walks down below,
	He with his friends as each of them follow
Disciples they are, twelve minus one,
	The other betrays him, is already gone.
He leaves most behind, walks further with three,
	Hell tells them to wait, he says, “Wait for me."
He walks on a way, till seclusion he reaches
	For mercy, relief, his God he beseeches.
The anguish within him drains out like a flood,
	The sweat of his agony streaming like blood.
He asks of his Father this suffering to take,
	Returns to his friends and calls them awake:
"Why are you sleeping," he says, "rise and pray,
	Help you will need many times on this day."
I can see in his eyes that soon he'll be dead.
	Then the soldiers arrive, the twelfth at their head.
One draws a sword, there's something amiss,
	He orders it down, to take the traitor's kiss.

                                       1975
	So Jesus came, and they with him,
	To a plot of land called Gethsemane;
	And he said to his disciples, "Sit down here,
	While I go in there and pray."
	But he took Peter and the sons of Zebedee with him.
	And now he grew sorrowful and dismayed;
	"My soul," he said, is ready to die with sorrow;
	Abide here awhile and watch with me."
	When he had gone on a little further,
	He fell on his face in prayer, and said,
	"My Father, if it is possible,
	Let this chalice pass me by;
	Only if thy will is, not as mine is."
	The he went back to his disciples
	And found them asleep.
	… And all at once while he was speaking to them,
	Judas, who was one of the twelve, came near.
	No sooner had he come near Jesus,
	Than he said, "Hail, master," and kissed him.
	Then the soldiers came forward and seized him.
