The Guitarist

Fingers pirouette in balance, moving
In rhythmic pulse with the music of the spheres,
Quickly bringing tension to the strings,
Dance up along competing vibrations,
Then turn back in unison, smoothing
Out and entwining a melody that clears
The downbeat air: deep note that rings,
Soft note that sings, gestations
Of the elaborate, then quickly turning
Back into restraint. Unchecked,
Unobliging to its mate, one hand
Syncopates and throws into the silence
A chord which the partner, learning
Of his partner’s escape, must collect
And parallel and try to wrest command,
Catching up notes, attempting to bring sense
Into the unity of the song.
