Note on: Looking For Ozymandias

Once again, I was on the AllPoetry site and spotted a contest that I thought would be fun. Write a poem that uses at least eight of these words in a poem:

kaleidoscope
language
manoeuvered
negotiated
oasis
panicked
qualified
raspberry
sandwich
threatening

The contest originator also noted "PS I like poems that make me laugh. soo..."

Like many of the poets who responded, I used all 10 of the words. To me, there was an obvious rhyme of the first word with telescope. And a not-quite rhyme of language with sandwich. And oasis immediately sited me in the desert. So about half an hour later I came out with my poem. All I need was the title.

The desert/explorer scene reminded me in a strange way of one of my favourite poems by Shelley, the last line of which is "The lone and level sands stretch far away." So that gave me the title, two explorers looking for the fabled statue.

Given the word choices, making it funny wasn't difficult, I just let the poem runaway with itself, compelled by the listed words and the rhyme scheme.

Quite coincidentally, the title is extremely reminiscent of a famous Australian novel & film, Looking For Alibrandi. Apart that it keeps popping into my head, it bears no similarity.
