Note On: Green-eyed Evelyn and Brown-eyed Harriet

Written for brevity poem #983 by Line Gauthier, where the punchline of the quote is "You just have to care". Children seem to do this intuitively, and I already had the title as part of another poem about these 3 young ladies. It recived an honourable mention in the contest (4th out of 21).

I'd arrived for an origami afternoon with the 3 delightful girls, where they ambushed me as described. Their mother is one of my "pseudo-nieces", daughter of one of my longest friends and much loved in her own right - we first met her when she was only a few weeks old, and I have strong memories of her aged a bit more than one, where the first word she said when she saw me was "play".

In a pause in our folding, while their mum and I were talking I came up with the line "Green-eyed Evelyn and brown-eyed Harriet, and Abi’s eyes are hazel, with amber hints." I was doing this to get identifying the twins straight, but it was obviously going to be part of a poem about them. That unwritten poem is still waiting to be finished, but the incident suited me as the ambush seemed perfect for the contest.
